I want to tell you about a place.

Under the waters of Tehri Lake lies Old Tehri, a town with 1,000 years of history,
temples, markets, homes and generations of families, all submerged when the Tehri
Dam was completed in 2006. The dam stands at 260.5 metres, the tallest in India
and the fourth tallest in the world. The reservoir it created, the Tehri Lake, spread
across 42 to 52 square kilometres and reaches a depth of 262 metres.
When you stand at the lake’s edge and look out at that vast stretch of emerald water,
you are looking at a valley that once held an entire civilisation. There is a particular

New Tehri was built on the hillside above as the planned replacement town, the
district headquarters of Tehri Garhwal. It is one of the few genuinely planned hill

For years, the journey from Delhi to Tehri was the thing that kept this destination
from reaching its potential. Five to seven hours on mountain roads, which meant
most people treated it as a once-a-year expedition rather than a regular escape.
In April 2026, that changed. The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, a 210-kilometre
access-controlled highway built at a cost of Rs 13,000 crore, brought Dehradun to
within 2.5 hours of Delhi. Tehri is roughly 45 minutes further. That means the entire
Tehri Lake experience is now a comfortable 3-hour drive from Connaught Place.
A Thursday evening departure. A long weekend that actually feels long. A place that
is now close enough to be a genuine second home, not just a holiday.
The expressway also passes through a 12-kilometre elevated wildlife corridor over
Rajaji National Park, the longest elevated wildlife corridor in Asia. It is the kind of
infrastructure detail that tells you this road was built with permanence in mind.
A Seaplane Just Landed Here. Yes, Really.
On April 6, 2026, SkyHop Aviation’s 19-seater seaplane took off from Jolly Grant
Airport in Dehradun and landed at Koti Colony on Tehri Lake. It was the first
successful seaplane landing on the lake and a milestone the Uttarakhand government
had been working toward for years.
SkyHop has since received its DGCA certification to operate India’s first dedicated
commercial seaplane services, with Tehri Lake identified as one of the validated
operational sites. The DGCA chose the lake specifically because as a deep-water
reservoir at altitude it maintains the water stability required for seaplane landings
year-round.
Let that sit for a moment. You will soon be able to fly into Tehri Lake. The journey
from Jolly Grant Airport to Koti Colony will take minutes, not hours. For
international guests and high-end travellers, this changes the accessibility equation
entirely.
Tehri Lake is being positioned to compete with Lake Como and Lake Geneva. That is
not a developer’s pitch. That is the Uttarakhand government’s stated objective in the
master plan currently under preparation.
The Rs 1,294 Crore Transformation Already Underway
The Asian Development Bank has approved a $126.42 million loan for sustainable,
climate-resilient tourism development around Tehri Lake. ADB covers 80% of the
project cost, the Government of Uttarakhand covers 20%.
Seven priority infrastructure projects are already in motion. The most significant of
these include a 77-kilometre ring road around the lake, designed with dedicated
footpaths and cycling tracks and scenic viewpoints, described as the critical lifeline of
the entire development project. Construction has already commenced on the first
phase from Koti Colony to the Dobra Chanti Bridge.
Also underway: the Koti Colony to New Tehri Ropeway, which will offer panoramic
views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. The development of Timad village
as a dedicated tourism village. Upgrades to the ISBT and City Centre worth Rs 24.33
crore. A green cover and afforestation initiative worth Rs 29.12 crore. Two helipads
along the ring road for high-end access from Dehradun and Rishikesh. And floating
log huts on the lake for lakefront accommodation.
Tehri has been formally declared a Special Tourist Area under the Tehri Special Area
Development Act, with its own development authority, the TADA, specifically created
to oversee this transformation.
India’s Longest Suspension Bridge. At Night.
One of the most quietly spectacular things about Tehri is one that almost nobody
outside the region knows yet.
The Dobra Chanti Bridge, spanning 725 metres across Tehri Lake and standing 58
metres above the water, is India’s longest motorable suspension bridge. Built over 14
years and inaugurated in 2020, it connects Dobra and Chanti on either side of the
lake, cutting travel between Tehri and Pratapnagar from 5.5 hours to 1.5 hours.
At night, the bridge comes alive with a laser light show. From the lake by speedboat,
you watch the illuminated span reflected in the water below, with the dark
Himalayan ridgeline behind it. Travellers who have seen it describe it as genuinely
unexpectedly beautiful.
For context: this bridge is compared, in shape and drama, to the Golden Gate. It is
currently used mainly by locals and the occasional adventurous traveller. Within a
few years, it will be one of India’s most photographed landmarks.
PM Modi Called It a Wedding Destination. Here’s Why That Matters.
In March 2026, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami met Prime
Minister Modi and briefed him on the state’s progress. Among the developments
discussed: Uttarakhand is being developed as a global wedding destination, with a
dedicated wedding destination policy being formulated.
Tehri Lake, with its extraordinary scenery, the Dobra Chanti Bridge as a backdrop,
the Himalayan horizon, the emerald water and the 1,700-metre altitude, is one of the
flagship locations for this vision.
When India’s Prime Minister is being briefed on a destination’s wedding potential, it
is not a small thing. It signals national policy attention, budget allocation and the
kind of institutional momentum that transforms a place faster than any single project
could.
What You Can Actually Do There Right Now
None of this is future-tense. Tehri Lake is already a functioning adventure
destination with a growing calendar of events.
On the water: jet skiing, speedboating, kayaking, canoeing, parasailing, banana rides,
water surfing and scuba diving. The lake hosts national and international level
competitions in kayaking and canoeing. The Himalayan O2 Tehri Lake Festival, held
in March 2026, drew athletes and visitors from across India and featured adventure
sports competitions, stargazing nights and cultural performances.
On land: trekking trails across the Garhwal hills, visits to the Chandrabadni and Sem
Mukhem Nagraja temples, pre-wedding shoots at the Dobra Chanti Bridge, the Tipri
ropeway ride, and access to Rishikesh just 82 kilometres away.
The existing ropeway at the Tehri Dam site already gives visitors a bird’s eye view of
the reservoir. The new Koti Colony to New Tehri ropeway, when complete, will add
another dimension entirely.
The Destination Calendar is Filling Up
CM Dhami launched the Destination Tehri Calendar 2025, themed around winter
tourism, specifically designed to promote Tehri as a year-round destination rather
than a seasonal one. The festival calendar, the adventure sports programme and the
government’s active international positioning through ADB are all building toward
the same outcome: a destination with consistent demand across all twelve months.
Uttarakhand had over 40 million visitors in 2024. Tourism contributes
approximately 14.57% of the state’s SGDP. The Tehri Lake region is being positioned
as the state’s flagship non-religious destination, the one that draws travellers who
aren’t coming for the Char Dham but want the Himalayas without the crowds.
The Window That Won’t Stay Open Forever
Here’s the part I want you to sit with.
Every destination that became desirable had a moment before it became expensive.
Goa in the early 2000s. Alibaug a decade later. Kasauli. Coorg. Rishikesh itself,
before the boutique hotels arrived and quadrupled the land prices.
In each case, there was a window. A few years when the infrastructure signals were
clear, the government intent was obvious, the natural beauty was undeniable and the
prices still reflected a place the market hadn’t yet caught up with.
